Super wi-fi is on the way!

Super wi-fi is on the way.  Or so a consortium of BT, Microsoft, Sky and BBC would have you believe.  A new trial is due to start in Cambridge to demonstrate that they can use the so called ‘white spaces’ in the radio spectrum; those not required for TV broadcasting.  The idea is to create sufficient mobile bandwidth for the next generation of pads, laptops and phones that all require connectivity, no matter where the user is.

Growth in ‘smart devices’ such as these is set to increase by up to 90% between 2011 and 2015, and this trial aims to prove that utilising these gaps in the current bandwidth will allow users to access the data intensive services that are set to dominate the landscape in the coming years.  How long before a Star Trek communicator becomes standard issue we wonder….?
